INSPIRATION

Inspiration is our image of the day, something we like, we've seen, or done, a picture that gives us inspiration to push on, 365 days a year...

WIM HOF METHOD – RUST BOOK REVIEWS

Welcome to the Rust book reviews where we share our latest reads. I’m sure you’ll spot a theme in here somewhere but initially the books are focussed on topics to improve mind, body and performance.

Volkswagen Transporter T1

Volkswagen Transporter

Well, this is a different Inspiration! Seems this month 70 years ago (March 1950) the very first Volkswagen Transporter, the T1, rolled off the production line. Still going strong to this day, happy birthday. Of all the Transporters JB will always remember best the T2 pick-up that used to do the collecting of crashed bikes at Brands Hatch in the late 1970s into the 80s – his dad was a regular passenger…

manx-mist

Manx Mist

The Adventure Spec Challenge IoM 500 was one great adventure weekend. 500km on- and off-road, going the length and breadth of the Isle of Man. We’ll have a full report in our next edition of RUST, but in the meantime here’s Reuben Molina working his way through the mist in one of the forest plantations. Image: JB

Royal Enfield Bullet

India

It’s #TBT, a day we don’t officially observe here at RUST, but swimming against the tide can be tiresome… so, here’s an image of a mate of ours Dani, when we met him in Kerala back in 2015 scouting routes on a Royal Enfield Bullet 500. We love the way the immaculately dressed locals frame the shot, and Dani’s obvious joy in a late afternoon ride. Image: JB

JUHA

JUHA

On a hot and sunny day, here’s a #TBT to a hot and sunny day in 2011, at the WEC in Spain, and this is Juha Salminen on his screaming Husky TE250, on his way to his 13th and last world crown. Such a class act. Image: JB

perfection inspiration

PE-RFECTION

Got to love this old Suzuki PE400 we saw recently in Kent. Note the cool way the brake and sprocket stay on the swingarm while the wheel/tyre are worked on (that’s real enduro tech). Those are Fox Airshox too (cool). Young William Hughes here rode this PE to victory in the classic class recently at the 2019 Welsh Two Day so it’s a well used classic (we’ll not speak of the loose spokes!). Cracking bike. Image: JB

2020 Husqvarna enduro

FRIENDS OF THE FOREST

It’s all about the 2020 Husqvarna enduros right now. But along the way the photographer reaches out to create some art. Lovely image here of a bike in the woods. Couldn’t resist it.

Omar Mansour Alfardy

BREAK A LEG

TBT – to 2016: Break a leg: In theatrical terms that means good luck. Do the same in the backwaters of Madagascar and it’s not so much fun, as Omar Mansour Alfardy found out. Nothing like the attentions of a German film cameraman, an American presenter and the residents of a small village to make you feel conspicuous. Good drugs kept the pain at bay – until the witch doctor came by, and a nest full of ants. For real. Adventure, eh?

HUSKY 2020

HUSKY 2020

We’re off to the Husky 2020 enduro launch very soon. Promises to be excellent (as always). Here’s a flashback to a previous launch when Husky was in its Italian years, the year 2010 and that’s their ace little 125. Chances are well see a cool new wee TE150 this year. And by the by – wasn’t the Despres replica lid by Shark just the coolest?!

Adventure Spec Kielder 500

MAGICAL KIELDER

The Adventure Spec Kielder 500 was an amazing two-day adventure rally for big adventure bikes. For many, an excellent introduction to using their adventure bikes in the manner for which they’re intended. You’ve never seen so many smiles! Image: JB

2019 Yamaha WR450F

2019 Yamaha WR450F

Coming up in RUST #42 will be our test on Yamaha’s hugely updated WR450F. And what a bike…! Here’s Dylan Jones of the Yamaha Off Road Experience mid-flight!

Lockhart Basin on the ride into Moab

MOAB

A bit #TBT this, remembering riding the Lockhart Basin on the ride into Moab, Utah last November. We’ll have a full pictorial on this journey coming in RUST #41

TRIUMPH SPEED TWIN

TRIUMPH SPEED TWIN

Lots of dirt biking going on right now, but away from all the roost we’re loving the look of the new Speed Twin from Triumph, a brilliant mix of classic and modern.

2019 DAKAR BEGINS

2019 DAKAR BEGINS

It all starts in just a matter of hours. And it looks like quite a different Dakar this year – obviously we’ll see as the race unfolds. There’s a big job to do for the guys, though. Could this year be this man’s turn for victory – Joan Barreda’s? Who knows. But to all competitors: good luck and ride safe. Image: HRC

Eli Tomac

MILLION DOLLAR MAN

Barely 24 hours now to the start of the AMA Supercross season. We’re looking forward to seeing how this guy, Eli Tomac, goes. So often the fastest guy, the winner, but not the champion. Can he do it in 2019? Not if Messrs Anderson, Musquin and Roczen have anything to do with it. This pic comes from the Monster Energy Cup in Vegas, where Tomac won three from three to win the million dollars. Form he’ll want to take into this season. Image: JB

Caballero Rally 500

RALLY GOOD

RUST has just come back from Motorcycle Live! (the UK’s biggest motorcycle show). Great show and some great new bikes. But here’s one we really fell for. Those Fantic guys have been busy again – and yes, we can visualise ourselves casually adventuring around the world on this, their new Caballero Rally 500. Styling…

ISDE 2018

ISDE 2018

The ISDE is this year in Chile, a beautiful country as you can see here in Sarah Kinrade’s image of Giacomo Redondi enjoying day one of the event. USA and Australia led the World Trophy class at the end of day one – two countries that are far removed from the European ‘world’ championship scene. This is their world championship you got to think…

AMA SX team

THE DAY JOB

November is a training and testing month for the AMA SX teams. Lap after lap, days at a time, refining skills and set-up. And it’s super-important for TLD KTM’s Mitchell Falk here as he enters his rookie season in 250SX. Rookie he may be, but the 19 year old looked pretty sharp to us when we caught up with him and the guys at KTM’s SX season launch at Corona, CA. Image: JB

Vegas SX

NEXT GENERATION

RUST was at the Vegas SX last night. So good to see four young dudes like these, in years to come they’ll be remembering these nights. Hopefully while shooting the breeze between rides

RV'S RETIREMENT

RV’S RETIREMENT

RUST is just back from a quick trip to California. Dropped by Milestone MX Park while we were there, saw this guy cutting some serious laps. It’s Ryan Villopoto, he’s been retired since 2015 but you wouldn’t know it to watch him. Good to see he still loves to ride. For the fun, like most of us…

SALVINI'S SALVATION

SALVINI’S SALVATION

Wow the big guy from Bologna has certainly hit form this year. Yep, since signing for Team Jolly Zanardo, Alex Salvini has been on top form. Seems he loves his Husqvarna – so much so he’s topping the enduro world championship. He’s a great guy, a hard worker and always up for some fun. Yeah, we like him! Image: Future7Media / RedBullContentPool

Toni Bou

BOU’S CENTURY

BOU’S CENTURY: Congratulations to Toni Bou on his 100th world trials victory at the weekend (at the Portuguese GP), he’s now the all time most successful trials rider, surpassing Dougie Lampkin’s 99 wins. Bou’s 100 comes from 200 world trials rounds ridden, but in fact he’s been on the podium on 145 of those. Some record. Some man. Photo: HRC

BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy

DESERT SONS and DAUGHTERS

Editor JB is just back from Mongolia and the BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy. Seems he had a ball, as always. He snapped this image along the way. Eight days of epic riding is how he described it…

Pedro Matos

PEDRO

We’re just back from Portugal where we’ve been riding with this guy, Pedro Matos. He reminded us of the talent that’s out there, virtually undiscovered, at local level all over the world. Guys who can ride to an international level but because of circumstances never get to play major league. Local heroes.

Dougie Lampkin

MR. SSDT

This is Dougie Lampkin, 12-time world champion and starting Monday (May 7) he’ll be trying to become a 12-time winner of the Scottish Six Days Trial too. Last year he won it on one mark lost. Could he clean it this year? Great man, brilliant event. Image: Devon Steigerwald / Red Bull

VIVA LAS VEGAS

Being big AMA SX fans here at RUST, we’re looking forward to this weekend’s showdown in Vegas. Our money’s on Jason Anderson for the big title, he’s been the man this year and he deserves it. He’s just gotta get the job done… Great image here by Simon Cudby / Husqvarna that simply says it all

SUNDERLAND AWARDED THE SEAGRAVE TROPHY

SUNDERLAND AWARDED THE SEAGRAVE TROPHY

Great news today, seeing Sam Sunderland being awarded the prestigious Segrave Trophy by the Royal Automobile Club in recognition of becoming the first Brit to win the Dakar Rally (in 2017). Sam was suitably delighted, “I’m absolutely honoured to receive this prestigious award from the Royal Automobile Club. I am so proud to have my name alongside so many of my racing heroes like John Surtees, Barry Sheene and Joey Dunlop. I have huge respect for everyone who has been a part of the Trophy’s history’.
