Diary Dates

Diary dates for the bucket list – not just any old race, but must-do events that’ll bring a smile to your dial for the rest of your days...

Gotland Grand National

Fancy heading out into the icy Baltic Sea to a remote island, so as to ride through a military firing range, knee-deep in muddy slop, for three hours – in the company of over 3000 other dirt riders? It's a Swedish classic apparently. Obviously a Scandi speciality but – a bit of trivia here – the event has been won by two non-Scandi's, one being an Australian, Josh Strang in 2015 (its a long way from Finke...)

RED BULL DAY IN THE DIRT

In fact three days... This year marks the 20th running of this self-style 'Woodstock of MX', where the great and the good of the US dirt biking scene get together at the iconic Glen Helen track for a bunch of fun races and general socialising. With team races, classics and a two-stroke revival (come to enduro boys – two-strokes never left!) plus bands and chill time, it's a cool weekend. Apparently popular with Hollywood types, too.

Intercontinental Rally

A classic roadbook rally that follows in the tracks of Dakar rallies of the past: Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal. You can race or ride and the class options are many and varied. We like the Lite Adventure option, which goes half-distance (seven days) and for just €700 entry fee gives you a great opportunity to dip your toe into rallying without a massive commitment in cash terms or for laying your bod on the line going dust or glory...

2018 A4DE

The Australian's love of enduro is reflected in the fact each year they run their own mini-ISDE, the Australian Four Day Enduro. 2018 is a special year as they celebrate the 40th running of the event and they're heading back to a favourite stomping ground, Cessnock in NSW – a venue that hosted the ISDE itself in 1992. Event trivia – in 2001 the A4DE ventured overseas for the one and only time, being hosted in New Zealand that year...

Afrikaburn

Why not ride out, 300km north of Cape Town, to the desert of Tankwa Karoo and experience the AfricaBurn. It's a week-long temporary encampment that features art, costume, music and performance – ah, yes, and the odd 'mutant vehicle'. And then there are the iconic 'sculptural burns' that give the event its name. Something real different, and mind expanding (or should that be 'mind altering'?)...

Finke Desert Race

A race only the Aussies could imagine – and be brave enough to compete in. Located in the red centre of Australia, it's simply a 226km sprint across the desert between the outback settlements of Finke and Alice Springs. Ridden one way on day one, then return the next. Terrain is sand (lots of it), clay (less) plus there are creek crossings and occasional dirt tracks. It's fearsomely fast and consequently quite dangerous. Just to spectate is a major adventure. Fancy a go? Entries open January 29, 2018...

The 50th Lake Elsinore Grand Prix

If you entered only one race in 2018 you'd have to think the Harvey Mushman 100-miler would have to be it. The Elsinore GP became world famous through Bruce Brown's On Any Sunday, so famous Honda named their 1970s motocrossers after it. It went to ground for a while, but its back now and offers a range of races and classes running around the traditional 7-mile town-and-country track. For us at RUST the HM100 has to be the big draw. Gotta celebrate that half-centenary...
